If you want to remain competitive in the job market, you must always renew yourself.  While hunting for the job, keep your professional skills sharp.  You could do this by attending professional conferences, seminars, lectures, and groups. You can build your own online portfolio through LinkedIn, which details your skills and qualifications as well through your LinkedIn profile. There is also a recommendation feature, where you can ask former colleagues or employers to recommend you if they feel you did a good job for them.

Finding jobs nowadays are hard especially with recession and the increasing unemployment rate.  In looking for jobs, job security may not be your top criteria and instead you may focus only on the salary and the work. The hiring process differs in every company. Employers may ask potential applicants to undergo multiple interviews. Practicum is one of the most important experiences a college student will undergo in his or her college years. It provides a training ground for future employment, more so if the student takes a job that is related to his or her course. The student takes some responsibility in the assigned tasks to him or her and is expected to produce quality outputs that adhere to the standards of the company/agency that the student is working for.

The student should be serious about his or her practicum since this will hone him or her in dealing with the corporate world.

The first step in choosing a career is not browsing through the classifieds in the newspaper or the internet; it’s by sitting down in a quiet corner of your room with pen and paper in hand and think.

Do not ask yourself what you see yourself doing for the rest of your life. That’s too hard a question to answer. Many people in their forties are still trying to find their real calling in life. In finding a first career, focus on the here and now. List down what you know about yourself – interests, hobbies, interests, skills, knowledge, and talents. From there, you can gleam in with which field you would want to start.

If you do get a job opening that you want sometimes, it would usually happen when you’re unprepared and since it took you a lot of time to find an opening, you’re more than eager to accept the job offer just so you’d get a job and also to give you the feeling that the long wait was worth it. But don’t fall into this trap. Even if a job offer took long to come you should still approach it objectively. Think about the offer seriously. Only accept it if you think the offer is something that is too good to pass up. It will be a better decision in the long-term.
